​Recession Risks: What It Means and Where the U.S. Economy Might Be Headed, According to Experts

President Trump raised concerns this week by not ruling out the possibility of a U.S. recession, while Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick defended Trump's economic policies even if they lead to a downturn. A recession is typically defined as a sustained and widespread decline in economic activity, determined by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), which evaluates indicators like employment, consumer spending, and industrial production.

Currently, the U.S. economy does not appear to be in a recession, as job growth continues and only some warning signs—such as declining retail spending and shaken consumer confidence—have emerged. While traditional recession triggers aren’t flashing red, uncertainty surrounding tariffs, trade, and fiscal policy is dampening economic sentiment.

If a recession occurs, job losses and rising unemployment would be the clearest indicators. Lower-wage and minority workers are often hit hardest, along with those carrying heavy debt burdens.
