Hegseth calls rare meeting of large number of generals and admirals

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered an unprecedented meeting of hundreds of U.S. generals and admirals at the Marine base in Quantico, Virginia, next Tuesday. U.S. officials say they do not know the meeting’s purpose, making it highly unusual and raising speculation within the Pentagon.

The gathering comes after Hegseth’s controversial decisions to remove top officers—including former Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. CQ Brown Jr. and Navy Adm. Lisa Franchetti—and to implement a “Less Generals More GIs Policy” that mandates at least a 20% reduction in four-star officers, as well as cuts across the National Guard and combatant commands.

While senior commanders normally meet with defense secretaries, the scale of this meeting—potentially involving several hundred top leaders—has no modern precedent and poses logistical and security challenges. The Pentagon has not disclosed attendance numbers or the agenda, leaving many officers uncertain about what will be discussed. Read More.

Gold price today, Friday, September 26: Gold edges toward $3,800 on new tariff announcements

Gold Market Summary – September 26, 2025

  • Current Price & Gains: Gold futures opened Friday at $3,781.50/oz, up 1.2% from Thursday and nearly 8.5% higher in September. Prices are edging toward $3,800, up 11.9% in the past month and 42% year-over-year.

  • Driver of Surge: The rally followed President Trump’s new tariffs—100% on branded pharmaceuticals (unless made in the U.S.), 25–50% on heavy trucks and furniture, and a potential levy on chipmakers. The uncertainty around these tariffs is fueling demand for gold as a safe-haven asset.

  • Market Context:

    • A year ago (Sept 2024), gold traded at $2,662/oz.

    • Goldman Sachs projected earlier this year that gold would hit $3,700 by year-end 2025, a forecast already exceeded.

    • Central bank buying and tariff-related economic fears are keeping bullish momentum strong.

  • Retail Investment Trend: Costco now sells gold bars, silver coins, and platinum bars—reflecting growing mainstream demand for precious metals as wealth diversifiers.

  • Historical Note: Gold tends to run in long up/down cycles. After stagnation in the 2010s, it is now in a strong uptrend. Read More.
