Fear of World War III Rises: Poll Shows Western Anxiety Over Russia, U.S. Tensions, and Nuclear Threats

A new YouGov poll reveals widespread fears among Americans and Western Europeans that a third world war could break out within the next five to ten years, with tensions involving Russia viewed as the most likely trigger. The survey, conducted ahead of the 80th anniversary of VE Day, also found:

  • 41% to 55% of Europeans and 45% of Americans believe a global war is likely soon.

  • Half of respondents believe Nazi-style crimes could happen again in the U.S. or another Western country.
